Red wines that have stood the test of time. Red wines that has been around for many years.
Alto Rouge
The land that became Alto was originally part of the Groenrivier farm, with title deeds dating back to 1693. Alto Rouge, the estate's iconic blended red, was first made from the 1922 vintage and exported to the UK in 1924, before being released locally in 1933. Alto is remarkable for having only five winemakers in its long history, a testament to continuity and generational stewardship.
The iconic Alto Rouge 2023 is a blend of 46% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Shiraz, 23% Cabernet franc, 3% Petit Verdot and 1% Merlot.
Vriesenhof Jan Boland Coetzee
The Jan Boland Coetzee pays homage to the founder of Vriesenhof and embodies a lifetime of his observation and wisdom accumulated amongst the vines.
The components are vinified separately, and the blend is assembled after 4 months. Merlot (49%), Cabernet Sauvignon (28%) and Cabernet Franc (23%) all from Stellenbosch, The wine was matured in French oak barrels for 18 months. A combination of 2nd /3rd and 4th fill barrels were used.
Youthfully tinged, deep ruby in appearance. Crunchy fennel and oregano notes pair well with ripe Merlot fruit providing a complex blend of aromas. Subtle notes of wood spice provide an aromatic lift - dense and smooth textured, the finish savoury.
Simonsig Pick of the bunch Pinotage
Simonsig and Pinotage are closely linked through innovation and early belief in South Africa's own grape.
Simonsig was one of the early estates to champion Pinotage at a time when the variety was still finding its identity. Under the leadership of Frans Malan, Simonsig focused on crafting a cleaner, more elegant style of Pinotage-helping move it away from rustic perceptions and toward finesse and balance.
In short, Simonsig helped Pinotage gain credibility, proving it could stand alongside the world's great red wines while remaining proudly South African. It was also the first red wine released by Simonsig in 1971
This Pinotage wine unveils a captivating experience with a good core of fruit at its
heart. Ripe red fruit notes of cranberry and raspberry dominate, lending a succulent and
juicy character to the palate. Lightly wooded, soft and fruity.
