A Cape Blend red wine is a proudly South African style that showcases the character of the Cape through a blend of grape varieties-most importantly Pinotage.
By informal tradition, a Cape Blend must include Pinotage, usually making up 30-70% of the wine. The remaining components often feature classic varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Shiraz, or Cabernet Franc, chosen to add structure, complexity, and balance.
Typically, Cape Blends are rich, expressive reds with notes of dark berries, plum, spice, and earthy undertones, making them versatile wines that pair beautifully with braaied meats, hearty dishes, or simply good company.
