A Cape blend of six different varieties. All five the Bordeaux varieties (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec) plus a big splash of Pinotage! The name, Figurehead, refers to the figurine on the bowsprit of old sailing ships.
Bouquet and Palate: This Cape blend (15% Pinotage) reveals raspberries and blackcurrant on the nose with a hint of spicy eucalyptus and caramelized banana from the Pinotage. Herbaceous black olives leads to a complex palate with ripe tannins and warm spice.
Style: Dry red wine
Cellar Technique: All grapes were hand picked and sorted in the vineyards. A second berry sorting was done in the cellar, before a pure yeast culture was inocculated. The juice was pumped over the skins 3-5 times per day and manual punch downs done for 5 days. Once fermentation was complete, the wine was drained off the primary lees and transferred to a resting tank. Malolactic fermentation and a brief settling period preceded the wines transfer to a combination of 225 litre barrels of French oak types. (25% New)
