Lomond SMV Red Blend Case - 6 x 750ml

Lomond wines was established in July 2004 as a joint venture between Distell and Lomond properties. Lomond is situated in the Uilenkraal river valley in the Gansbaai area. It is located at a most southerly latitude (- 34 degrees celsius 34 South), and is one of only a handful of wine farms within the Cape Agulhas appellation of origin. The farm falls within the Winkler zone 2, with relatively little variation in day-night temperatures throughout the year. Located about 8km from the sea, it is kept cool by the south-westerly and south-easterly winds during the summer months. The prevailing cool temperatures cause the vineyards to ripen several weeks later than their Stellenbosch counterparts, and harvesting takes place towards march. Altitudes vary between 50m and,100m above sea level, with certain blocks receiving unobstructed exposure to the sea. Even the lowest lying vineyards benefit from the cool maritime winds. The farm comprises 1 000ha, of which 120ha are planted under vine. The main grape varieties are Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, Shiraz, Semillon, Nouvelle, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir and Viognier. The Lomond farm boasts unique geological formations. The soils are mostly of sandstone and shale origins, with the intrusion of granite in sections creating lean, gravelly soils. This marked diversity of soil types combined with the valley location allow for the production of superb single-vineyard wines from individual vineyard blocks. Lomond is a member of the walker bay fynbos conservancy as well as the Biodiversity and Wine Initiative (BWI), which rewards producers for sustainable wine-growing practices. Vineyards The Syrah grapes were sourced from a vineyard block situated on a north-facing slope with a view of the ocean just 7km away. The soils in which the vines are grown comprise gravelly Was bank and decomposed granite soils. The Mourvedre hails from a half-hector vineyard block growing in sandy loam soil on a north-facing slope.

The viognier grapes were sourced from a north-facing vineyard grown in a mixture of sandy and gravelly soils. All the vineyards receive drip irrigation when necessary and are trellised on a seven-wire hedge system. Pest and disease management is implemented according to IPW rules and standards. Winemaking The Syrah was fermented dry in stainless steel tanks before undergoing malolactic fermentation. The Mourvedre was fermented in open 500l wooden vats, and malolactic fermentation was then completed in barrel. The viognier spent the first third of the fermentation process in stainless steel tanks before being transferred to old 300l barrels for the remainder. The wine was left to mature further in a combination of new and older French Oak for between 12 and 14 months.
