A temperature sensor on a vehicle, usually the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor, monitors the engine's coolant temperature to provide crucial data to the engine control unit (ECU). This sensor helps the ECU optimize fuel injection, ignition timing, and cooling fan operation for peak engine performance and efficiency. It functions as a thermistor, a variable resistor whose resistance changes with temperature, allowing the ECU to accurately calculate the coolant temperature and, in turn, the engine's heat levels.
