The SME Big Easy Stepper Driver is a high-performance microstepping motor driver module designed to control bipolar stepper motors with exceptional precision and smooth operation. Based on the proven Allegro A4983 stepper motor driver IC and originally designed by Brian Schmalz, this module is an enhanced version of the popular Easy Driver, offering increased current capability for more demanding motion control applications.
Capable of delivering up to 2A per phase, the Big Easy Stepper Driver is ideal for CNC machines, 3D printers, robotics, camera sliders, automated equipment, laboratory instruments, and custom motion control projects. Its integrated chopper current control technology ensures efficient motor operation while reducing heat generation and improving torque across a wide range of operating speeds.
The driver defaults to 1/16 microstepping, providing smooth, accurate motor movement with reduced vibration and quieter operation compared to full-step driving methods. The module supports a maximum motor supply voltage of 35V, allowing greater torque and improved performance when driving larger stepper motors.
An onboard 5V and 3.3V voltage regulator eliminates the need for a separate logic power supply, simplifying wiring and reducing overall system complexity. The driver is compatible with both 3.3V and 5V logic systems, making it suitable for use with popular development platforms including Arduino, Raspberry Pi (via appropriate interfaces), PIC, AVR, STM32, ESP32, and many other microcontroller systems.
Although the board is capable of operating without active cooling in many applications, a heatsink is recommended when driving motors near the maximum 2A per phase rating to ensure reliable long-term performance.
Whether you're building a precision CNC machine, developing a robotic platform, or designing automated motion systems, the SME Big Easy Stepper Driver delivers reliable, efficient, and accurate stepper motor control for professional and hobby electronics projects.
