This indigenous shrub grows in fynbos habitats near streams, on the lower slopes of the Western Cape mountains. It has rounded green leaves with visible oil glands along the edges, a distinctly reddish stem, and beautiful white star-shaped flowers. Buchu is one of the most popular local remedies, long valued as a tonic for physical wellbeing.

FRAGRANCE

Intensely aromatic and pungent, with a striking blackcurrant character woven through minty, green, and slightly camphoraceous notes. Bold and distinctive - a wild, herbaceous fynbos scent unlike anything else in the range, best appreciated in small doses.

Note: Buchu is famously potent - it's one of the most intense natural fragrance materials around (used at well under 1% in perfumery).

Latin Name: Agathosma Betulina

Family: Rutaceae

Common Indigenous Names: Round-leaf Buchu (English), Buchu (Khoi), iBuchu (Xhosa), Boegoe (Afrikaans)

Uses: As cited in reputable literature, the leaves have traditionally been steeped in a brandy tincture called "Boegoe-brandewyn," used for stomach ailments and hangovers. Buchu is also commonly used to stimulate urinary function, ease kidney and urinary tract discomfort, provide symptomatic relief from gout and rheumatism, and as an external application to wounds and bruises.

Quirky Indigenous Uses:

  • Regarded as an elixir of youth
  • Believed to have anti-ageing properties

Extraction: Steam-distilled
