Harvester termites, also called premiere, are tiny insects ranging from 15 - 25 mm in length. This group of termites is brownish with stripes across their back and are the only termites that can be exposed to sunlight. They are made up of workers, soldiers, and the queen and are efficient little agriculturists, clipping and transporting grass to their nests. The colonies reside underground in nests that can be found both close to and far below the soil's surface. Their extensive underground tunnels can weaken soil structure and damage the roots of nearby plants. They make harvest holes in lawns and come out early morning to feed. The primary food source for harvester termites is grass, leaves, and other organic plant material. They primarily feed during the day and are particularly active in autumn and early winter, but can be a problem all year round. Bare round patches stripped of lawn surrounded by mounds of soil, is a telltale sign that there is an infestation. Early detection and intervention are crucial to prevent damage and colony growth. They can destroy your entire lawn if left uncontrolled, even a healthy lawn.
