- Okapi knives were first produced in 1902 in Solingen, Germany - a city famous for sword and knife making. The knives were originally made for export to Germany's African colonies.
- The brand name "Okapi" comes from the Okapi - a giraffe-like African animal discovered in the Congo around the same time.
- In 1988, the tooling and trademark were bought by a South African company (then trading as All Round Tooling), and production moved to South Africa.
- Today, Okapi is owned by Lasher Tools (since 2019), which continues to manufacture Okapi knives and a range of other hand-tools in South Africa.
