Longjing, also known as "Dragon Well", is one of China's most celebrated and historic green teas, renowned for its graceful flat leaves, smooth texture, and refined aroma.

The name "Longjing" refers to a village near Hangzhou in Zhejiang Province, where a legendary well was said to have water that danced like a dragon during rainfall, giving rise to the name Dragon Well. The surrounding terroir and misty hills of West Lake have made this region synonymous with tea of the highest calibre.

With a history dating back over a thousand years, Longjing gained particular fame during the Qing Dynasty when Emperor Qianlong visited the area. He was so impressed by the tea that he honoured eighteen bushes near Lingyin Temple with imperial status, a recognition that elevated Longjing to tribute tea, reserved for the emperor and his court.

This tea is known for its distinct appearance, with hand-pressed, flat jade-green leaves bearing fine white hairs that signal quality and freshness. Upon infusion, Longjing releases a clean, golden-green liquor with a warm chestnut aroma. The taste is smooth, with a nutty, buttery texture and delicate sweetness. A gentle creamy sensation appears briefly before the fresh, tender aftertaste emerges.

Longjing is prized for its clarity and balance. It has naturally low bitterness and a calming, clear energy. Its subtle complexity makes it well suited for both quiet contemplation and refined social gatherings. It pairs beautifully with steamed dumplings, sautéed greens, or lightly salted nuts, and it is equally rewarding on its own.

Serving suggestion:

We recommend brewing green tea with water at around 75 degrees Celsius. Steep the tea for approximately 2 minutes, then taste to see if the strength suits your preference. If you desire a stronger brew, you may steep it for another minute or two. Use a teapot with an infuser for best results. If a teapot is not available, an infuser ball, infuser cup, or a fine mesh strainer will also work well. For each serving, use about 3 to 4 grams of loose leaf tea, or roughly one teaspoon. This tea may be steeped a second time; simply extend the brewing time to draw out the remaining flavour.
