"Lost River" is a captivating blend of post-ambient textures, presenting a rich sonic experience that stands out as a landmark recording in ECM's recent history. Drummer Michele Rabbia and guitarist Eivind Aarset, frequent collaborators in duo concerts, joined forces with trombonist Gianluca Petrella for the first time on this album. Primarily improvised, the music reveals intricate details within its evocative soundscapes, constantly unveiling new forms. Rabbia's drumming is both creatively unrestrained and energetically driving, enhanced by his adept use of electronics. Aarset's fluid guitar playing will resonate with fans familiar with his work on projects like Dream Logic and collaborations with artists such as Nils Petter Molvær, Tigran Hamasyan, and Andy Sheppard. Petrella's presence as a leading instrumental voice may surprise those who primarily know him from his jazz solos with Enrico Rava and Giovanni Guidi; his versatile range shines under Manfred Eicher's expansive production, captured during sessions in Udine in January 2018.
