The compass is an important tool for measurement and operation. Its basic function is orientation. The compass is academically known as Luojing and is said to have originated in the era of the Yellow Emperor. Later, through successive generations of sages, and in accordance with the principles of the Yijing and the He Tu Luo Shu, combined with observations of the sun, moon, the five planets, the seven celestial bodies, and the movements of stars and constellations, as well as surveys of the earth's mountains, rivers, plains, and undulating terrain, it was gradually refined and developed into what is commonly called the Luopan or Luogeng. It is rarely referred to as Luojing nowadays.
It is used by Feng Shui masters and navigators to determine directions and survey terrain.
Functions of the Luopan:
- Survey Feng Shui
- Locate dragon veins and acupoints (seek auspicious sites)
- Protect and secure dwellings
- Attract wealth and gather fortune
- Enhance family fortune
- Transform unfavorable Feng Shui
