Repotting Orchids:
- Orchids like compacted root systems. They do not prefer plenty of space for their roots to develop and in fact if overpotted they are likely to cease flowering until the root ball fills the pot once more. As your orchid grows it is inevitable that it will eventually require a larger container, the clear plastic containers supplied are ideal. As you can see through the walls of the container it is easy to tell when watering is required and you can also see if your orchids roots are healthy.
When should I repot?
- Repot newly purchased orchids or when their roots become over crowded, damaged or tangled. Squishy, brown roots are also a reason for repotting. Generally, orchids should be repotted every one to three years. If you want a healthy orchid which will rebloom you need to repot as this refreshes the orchid's root system and provides the plant with fresh nutrients and increased air circulation.
How do I repot my orchid?
- Repot after the orchid has finished flowering and new growth appears. Avoid repotting while the orchid is flowering. Water your orchid well a day or so before repotting.
- Soak the amount of potting medium you will need for several hours or preferably overnight. For most orchids a 50/50 mix of the bark and sphagnum moss will be fine. For more water retention use more moss, and for a drier mix use less.
- Mist any tools you intend using with the hydrogen peroxide solution to prevent the spread of disease.
- Gently remove your orchid from its current pot. If its pot bound, you can use a serrated knife around the edges to loosen the roots. Gently remove the old media from the roots taking care not to break them.
-If you find squishy or brown roots you will need to eliminate those entirely.
- Gently spray small amounts of hydrogen peroxide directly to areas where you suspect infection, like damaged leaves or the base of the plant but try to avoid much contact with the roots aside from those which you needed to cut.
- You can also spray minor wounds, any fresh cuts, or damaged areas on the leaves to prevent infection. Do not be alarmed if you notice a little frothing, this is normal.
- Place your orchid into the container and add the prepared potting medium around the plant's roots taking care to not bunch the roots up together. There must be sufficient media in the pot that if you pick the plant up by the leaves, the plant should not pull out.
- Replace your orchid to its usual spot and water and feed as normal. If you notice some surface mold growth on the media starting to develop, you can lightly spray with the hydrogen peroxide.
