Self-inflating mattresses provide more than just comfort - they keep you warm. A sleeping bag on its own won't keep you warm, you need good insulation below you from the cold ground. Self-inflating mattresses don't inflate all the way - you will need to firm it up with a few breaths. Simply open the valve and roll it up for compact storage.
