Hen Life Cycle Stages:
Egg Stage:
- A hen lays eggs after mating (or unfertilized eggs if not fertilized)
- The hen incubates the egg by sitting on it for about 21 days, keeping it warm until it's ready to hatch
Hatching:
- The chick uses a small egg tooth to break through the shell, a process called pipping
- After hatching, the chick is covered in soft down feathers and is wet and tired but soon becomes fluffy
Chick Stage:
- The baby chicken, called a chick, is dependent on its mother (or heat lamp if raised by humans) for warmth and protection
- They start to eat small grains, insects, and water, and grow quickly
Juvenile / Pullet Stage:
- As the chick grows, it develops juvenile feathers and becomes more independent
- Female juveniles are called pullets until they start laying eggs
Adult Hen Stage:
- Hens reach sexual maturity around 5-6 months of age
- Adult hens have fully developed feathers and can lay eggs, continuing the cycle
