Plectrums are a must have for nearly every guitarist.
Strumming with a guitar plectrum results in a clearer, louder, more pronounced sound. The ""attack"" on the sound makes it perfect for playing individual notes on lead guitar. The softer plectrums are generally used for strumming while the harder picks are great for lead guitar and picking.
