Justin Adams and Juldeh Camara have honed a distinctive, visceral electric fusion of Europe and Africa - a unity of Justin's rock and roll energy and Juldeh’s West African trance rhythms.
Live on stage, their repertoire of raw "Afro-billy" has unfolded over time to increasingly enthusiastic audiences, taking on a character only hinted at on the studio albums. Juldeh, using griot skills perfected since childhood, stirs the audience to a frenzy while Adams' drone guitar can provide sheets of sonic attack sometimes closer to The Velvet Underground's Sister Ray than a conventional world music gig.
It is the spirit of these live performances that Justin and Juldeh wanted to create in the recording studio with In Trance. These recordings were made live in the studio, each track done in one take, with no overdubs. They are being released in their full-length form, with an African sense of time and structure - no 3.30 here. Repetition builds on each track that grows slowly from song to abstraction, infused with psychedelic energy, a web of sound far greater than the sum of the players' parts.
One of England’s most innovative and original guitarists, Justin Adams has worked with Robert Plant, Peter Gabriel, and Tinariwen, among others. The Real World album, Tell No Lies is his second collaboration with Juldeh Camara. Juldeh has worked with many fine bands, including Ifang Bondi, Afro Manding, Zubop, ZubopGambia, Seckou Keita Quartet, Batanai Marimba and Joko.
For the recording of In Trance, Justin and Juldeh are joined by Billy Fuller on bass and Dave Smith on drums, and it is this four-piece unit that will tour.
In Trance is an extended version of a limited edition EP, The Trance Sessions (released March 2010), and features two tracks from this EP plus five further extended trance workouts.
